  • Han Kuo-yu clinches victory in legislative speaker election

Han Kuo-yu of the Kuomintang (KMT) emerged victorious over You Si-kun of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the 11th Legislative Yuan Speaker election, securing 54 votes compared to You’s 51 votes. The KMT also nominated Johnny Chiang, while the DPP fielded incumbent speaker You and deputy speaker Tsai Chi-chang. The Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) presented Huang Shan-shan as a candidate. After the first round of voting, no candidate had a majority, leading to a second round between Han and You. In the second round, all eight TPP legislators were absent, and the results mirrored the first round. Han’s win confirmed him as the 11th Legislative Yuan Speaker, with the deputy speaker election scheduled for later in the day.

  • Taiwan and Lithuania strengthen ties in defense of democracy

Legislative Speaker You Si-kun met with a Lithuanian delegation led by Matas Maldeikis, chairman of the Lithuania-Taiwan parliamentary friendship group. The meeting highlighted Taiwan’s recent election, which had a voter turnout of over 70%, as a clear message from the Taiwanese people to defend democratic freedom and national sovereignty. The delegation included three deputy speakers of the Lithuanian parliament and eight other cross-party lawmakers. Speaker You noted that 2024 is a "super election year" globally, with Taiwan being the second country to hold elections this year. He also expressed his wishes for Lithuania’s upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in May and October 2024. The speaker emphasized that elections represent the "possibility of choice," "freedom to participate in politics," and "protection of speech," which are rights unfathomable under authoritarian rule. He called on global democratic allies to unite in facing authoritarian challenges and safeguarding democracy and prosperity worldwide. Speaker You expressed gratitude for Lithuania’s support and highlighted the countries’ cooperation on humanitarian aid, particularly in helping Ukrainian students return to school.

  • Eslite Xinyi closes after 18 years, marks end of an era

The Eslite Xinyi Store, a popular local bookstore in Taipei, closed its doors on Christmas Eve 2023. The farewell was emotional, with many visitors leaving thank you and goodbye messages on a memorial board. Over its 18-year tenure, the store welcomed an estimated 200 million people, averaging 10 million visits annually. The closure was due to the Uni-President Group reclaiming the land for redevelopment. The torch of being a 24-hour bookstore will be passed on to the Songyan store starting Jan. 20, 2024. The Songyan store is expected to triple its book capacity and draw increased traffic to Taipei’s Eastern District once renovations are complete.

  • TPP surges to lead in Taiwan polls, edging out KMT and DPP

The latest survey by the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation (TPOF) reveals that the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) has become the largest party in Taiwan, with a support rate of 25.3%. This puts them slightly ahead of the Kuomintang (KMT) at 24.8% and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) at 24.5%. The TPP has experienced a significant increase in support, rising by 8.3% in the past month, while the DPP and KMT have seen declines of 2.6% and 1.7% respectively. TPOF chairman Michael You emphasized that this poll marks a historic first in Taiwan’s party politics, with less than one percentage point separating the three parties. This development signifies a remarkable evolution in the political landscape. The TPP has benefitted the most from the "Blue-White alliance," which has been seeking a change in ruling parties. With the 2024 presidential election still over a month away, Taiwan’s party competition has entered an unprecedented phase where the three parties are on equal footing. Other political parties such as the New Power Party (NPP) and Taiwan Statebuilding Party (TSP) received 2.9% and 1% support respectively, with 1.8% for other minor parties. Approximately 19.1% of respondents did not express support for any party, while 0.7% were undecided or refused to answer. The survey, conducted from November 19-21, used a dual-frame random sampling method encompassing both landlines and mobile phones.

  • Scalped tickets for Taipei Dome test match spark criticism

Taipei City Councilor Chen You-cheng criticized the Taipei City Government for its inaction against online ticket scalpers. He discovered that scalpers were selling tickets for the Taipei Dome’s inaugural test match at prices as high as NT$600, despite the tickets being intended to be free. The test match, scheduled for November 18, sold out 13,000 tickets in just 90 seconds. Chen received numerous complaints from the public, questioning the oversight mechanism of the city government and its restraint over Farglory, the Dome’s operator. He speculated whether the authorities were negligently allowing illegal activities to occur. Chen also highlighted that the city government reported 505 cases of ticket scalping incidents from June to October this year, yet no penalties were imposed. He criticized the city government for its laissez-faire approach, describing it as a clear dereliction of duty. Chen further criticized the city government for seemingly indifferent to implementing punitive measures against these infringements, as scalped ticket sales continue to occur for the Dome’s test match.
